In the coming days, Austria will continue to be spared from excessive heat—at least for now. Instead, it will remain rather chilly. However, it is likely to be sweaty work for the emergency services. On Sunday, there is an increased risk of severe weather, with violent thunderstorms expected in the east and southeast!

Ahead of the storms, temperatures are expected to rise on Sunday, reaching a maximum of 23 to 30 degrees. However, the risk of thunderstorms will increase during the day, first in the mountains and then in the east and southeast from the afternoon onwards.

“Locally, there is an increased risk of severe weather due to heavy rainfall in a short period of time, large hailstones, and, especially in the south and east, gusts of wind,” warns Michele Salmi, meteorologist at the Austrian Severe Weather Center.

Warning of squalls also on Monday

The low-pressure system will also bring cooler temperatures, with the start of the new week seeing daily highs often more than 10 degrees below those of the previous days, according to the Severe Weather Center. The sun will also take a short break for the time being, giving way to rain and thunderstorms, most likely in the Danube region and the east.

The risk of severe weather associated with the thunderstorms is significantly lower than it was on Sunday, but gusts are still possible near the thunderstorms, the expert predicts.

Tuesday will also be wet, with the sun making only rare appearances. The wind will be brisk to strong from the west to northwest, especially in the Danube region and in the east, with isolated squalls expected once again during thunderstorms. With highs of 15 to 24 degrees, it will even be temporarily cooler (!) than the seasonal average.

Summer returns

From the middle of the week, summer will slowly come back into view, initially mainly in the west, while in the east it will remain warm but unstable for the time being. Just in time for the weekend, however, stable weather will finally return here too, with temperatures reaching the 30-degree mark.
